What The Heck is a Poken?

Meet MY Poken

“Do you Poken?”

A Poken is a small gadget that allows you to “swap business cards” without the card! When you touch your poken to another poken, data is transferred. When you then plug your poken into your computer (via usb), you can transfer the contact info for that person into an online address book.

The ‘hand’ signifies the ritual of shaking hands when you first meet someone (or high five them!).

Will they “be the next big thing?” Many would say that they already are. Even those with iphone’s who can ‘bump’ each other to transfer data, are smitten by these cute little gadgets. They come in a variety of persona’s and are a conversation piece if nothing else!

ninjapoken In addition to the “cute factor”, there is also some coolness factor.
If you are Wayne Sutton, for example, you don’t need any ‘added coolness’ but a Ninja poken doesn’t hurt!
pokenpulse If the cute factor doesn’t do it for you, the ‘pulse’ sports a sleeker more ‘corporate’ identity, and adds a couple of gigs of usable memory as a bonus.
poken dashboard They one-up the old fashioned business card by their ability to update your information when it changes, and the online ‘card’ has links to your social networks and sites, and if you use twitter, it even shows your last tweet in the users timeline.

Pokens range from around $20-$40 in price and can be purchased in bulk, or customized with your company logo. There are a variety of places to buy them, but since Pokenzoo was kind enough to donate some as giveaways for our recent Real Estate BarCamp, I’m providing their link in the hopes that you will buy yours there:)

I won a Poken and although a very cute concept, I think the price of entry ($20-40) is way too high.

Although not everyone has an iPhone, I would argue way more people have iPhones than Pokens. I think a cross-platform Bump is just around the corner, which will basically kill Pokens.

They are way cuter than an iPhone, but I just think they are going to be obsolete really soon.
  • I love the whole idea behind Poken! What a great way to connect while attending conferences when you're trying to network in a hurry.
  • Nice post, Heather! And you hit the nail on the head, Wayne does not need any more added coolness!
